“The one who rejects Me and does not receive My words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.” — John 12:48 (ESV)

Start With Small Steps

Have you ever ice skated? I learned to ice skate when I was in college. The first time I laced up skates was with some friends, and wow, what a disaster. I had no chance of staying on my feet, and there was no way I was letting go of that wall.

The funny thing is, as I thought back to my first time on the ice, I thought about my early days as a Christian. I clung to my Bible like that wall I never wanted to let go of. But then I would build a little confidence and inch away into the open. If I got a little cocky, I might lose my balance, and while falling I would take someone else down. How that is so much like our Christian walk, that just when we think we are cruising and we get filled up with a little pride, we lose our way and bring someone else down.

The lesson to be learned is not to step out from the wall and skate freely, but to take small steps and build up your strength in Christ. As your foundation in Him grows, you will be able to move through life with greater confidence. Before you know it, your Bible won’t resemble a wall you cling to when you’re nervous, it will be the firm foundation your life is built on.
