Daily Devotional: Tuesday, March 1 - Unity, Not Uniformity

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” — Acts 2:44-47

Several seasons ago, I looked at the Rockets players sitting in chapel and noticed we had players and coaches from the West Coast, Midwest, Southeast and East Coast. We had players and coaches raised in the suburbs, and we had players from urban communities. We had Black and White players and coaches.

There wasn’t uniformity, but there was unity. They were on the same team and had one common goal: win an NBA championship. They all submitted to the same head coach. This was a picture of the Church, of what the Church should be — people from different backgrounds who are united as one body.

In Acts 2:44-47, we read, “All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”

Christians from around the world gathered as one Church. There wasn’t uniformity, but there was unity. They had one common goal — to be Christ’s witnesses (Acts 1:8) — and had the same Head Coach — Jesus Christ.

So today, commit to following Jesus Christ and His Word. Commit to Christ’s mission with other believers. Appreciate the diversity in God’s family. Lastly, restore any broken relationships with other Christians.
