In 1948, George de Mestral took a walk in the woods near his home in Switzerland. Upon returning, he was annoyed as he plucked burrs off his clothes and dog. Looking more closely, he noticed the burrs had microscopic hooks that caused them to firmly stick to what they touched. As an engineer, he wondered if this design might have a useful application. In 1955, he patented a “hook and loop” fastener, which is often used in space flight and operating rooms. I’m sure you have used it as well — Velcro!

God’s love is much like Velcro. The Hebrew word for God’s love is “hesed.” While difficult to translate to English, it is a love that encompasses all of God’s attributes, including loyalty.

God’s love sticks to us even better than Velcro. It will never let us go. Paul tells us in the Book of Romans that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Because we do not earn God’s love, we cannot lose it either.

The reality is we all fall short of God’s standards and deserve His wrath. But, God demonstrated His great love for us even amid our sin by sending Christ to die, that we might be forgiven and experience His love firsthand. His everlasting, loyal love has put its hooks in us and will never let go.

Meditate on God’s “hesed” love and allow it to turn your heart to worship.
