Daily Devotional: Tuesday, July 19 - The Generational Believer

“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” — 1 Timothy 6:11-12

Timothy, the spiritual son of the apostle Paul, was an up-and-coming man of God finding his way in ministry. He came from a sweet lineage of faith from his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. He was sincere and gifted, but also a little timid. Paul’s letters to him were dripping with encouragement and sweet sentiments of the prophetic words spoken over him and the sincere faith imparted to him.

Paul gave him a series of warnings about things that would keep him from the faith or shipwreck his faith if he was not careful. Paul taught Timothy how to present himself, how to be an approved worker and ultimately how to rightly handle the Word of Truth. Between the fine line of encouragement and correction, Timothy learned that seeking truth is pursuing the right things.

Sometimes pursuing truth means having mentors that constantly point out false things around you so you won’t miss the truth in front of you. When you commit to do life with someone, you must help them see what they cannot see and help them to hear what they would otherwise be deaf to.
