“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6

I was the youngest of three kids and the only girl. My two older brothers had one job: Teach me everything I didn’t know or could not do. They spent hours showing me how to throw a spiral, shoot a basketball or catch a baseball, and no matter the task, they were always up for the job.
One big thing they taught me was how to ride a bike — my powder blue “Sky Queen” with the white banana seat. With this, they showed greater patience and more grace for my learning curve, and previous experience told me I could trust them. There was always one brother behind me holding onto the bike and the other on the side giving direction. I don’t remember ever looking back, only focusing on the landscape in front and the steady voices behind.
Isn’t that what God does with us? He leads us through new circumstances with a firm hand and constant presence. In Proverbs 3:5-6, Solomon paints a beautiful picture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
My brothers were awesome with things like those bike lessons, but my trust in them had been established well before. I knew they would hold on until I got the hang of it, and I knew they would be behind me until I could pedal on my own. I am so thankful our God does the exact same thing for us. When it is all said and done, it’s really just a matter of trust.
