A few years ago, I was training to play basketball professionally. I had taken a part-time job with a ministry so I could continue my training. One day as I was praying, I asked God a simple question: “Do You even want me to play basketball?” That question started a season of seeking. I had played basketball my entire life — it was my passion. I had spent hours working on and honing my skills. I could do anything I wanted with a ball in my hand, but now I wasn’t sure if this was still the path God had for me.

My seeking soon led me to a 30-day fast. It was an intense time of prayer and denial so I could hear clearly from the Father and make the right decision. As the days drew on, I still had not received an answer. But on the last day of the fast, the title of my daily devotional was God’s answer to my future and His purpose.

To this day, I cannot tell you what the devotional was about, but I’ll never forget the title. It was clarity from Heaven for me: “Surrender your dreams and seek My will.” I didn’t ask any questions or offer any rebuttals; I simply put my basketball down and picked my Bible up full time.

The apostle Paul said, “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done” (Philippians 3:7, NLT). What is God asking you to put down so that you can pick Him up?
