“So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” — Ephesians 5:15-16 (NASB)

The game of basketball has much to do with time. There is a game clock, there is a shot clock, and there are various rules involving time. For example, a player has 10 seconds to get the ball across half court. Or, a player has five seconds to throw the ball in bounds and 10 seconds to shoot a free throw. Time is clearly a major part of the game of basketball.
Time is also a major factor in our lives. Time is fair and is no respecter of persons. Everyone is on the same time regardless of one’s race, gender, age or socioeconomic status. Everyone has 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, and 60 seconds in a minute. Scientists have not found a way to invent more time. Bankers have not found a way to save time. Politicians have not found a way to negotiate for more time. Time marches on toward eternity for all of us.
In light of all of this, what should we do with our time? The Bible says to make the most of our time. Ephesians 5:16 (above) says to make “the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Making the most of our time involves prioritizing and understanding what is most important and what is best for us and not just permissible for us. We should spend time in God‘s Word, time in prayer, and time in fellowship with other believers by going to church. We should find ways to love others and try to be salt and light to a world that, in some ways, is running out of time. The Bible reminds us in 2 Corinthians 6:2b, “I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
May God grant us grace to make the most of our time and impact the world for Christ with the time we have left.
