The great Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is!” How many times have we been told, “It’s just a game!”? As much as I want to agree with that statement, I just can’t. And I can’t because of the lessons learned through the game that teach us things we will carry with us for life.

Proverbs 1 teaches us the importance of learning and applying the things we learn. We also get the background and reasoning for this book of the Bible: It’s for gaining wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight, for receiving instruction on prudent behavior, and doing what is right, just and fair. As you read through all 31 chapters in this book, you’ll find instructions and lessons you can learn that will carry you through the rest of your life.

Let me encourage you to not take for granted the things you go through each day — the wins and losses, positives and negatives. Learn from them and allow the Lord to instill instructions in your heart, and then carry them with you the rest of your life.

Who knows, one day you may be tasked to coach, and standing before your team, you too can instill in them the positive things that God taught you through the sport you play.

— Scott Nicholson, Mississippi State football chaplain
