“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.” — Romans 1:17 (CSB)

It was the bottom of the ninth, two outs, and the tying run stood on third. The young pitcher looked to the dugout, nerves tightening his grip. He’d trained for this moment, but doubt still crept in. His coach didn’t shout instructions — just locked eyes with him and gave a small nod, a quiet gesture of trust. That was all he needed. Deep breath. One pitch. One moment.
Sports are full of these faith-to-faith moments. Every play, every shift, every inning, every set — athletes are constantly stepping into unknowns, trusting preparation, teammates and often something deeper. Faith, like the game, isn’t a one-and-done decision. It’s a rhythm. A way of life.
Habakkuk 2:4 (ESV) says “the righteous shall live by his faith,” not “the righteous believed once and now it’s all smooth sailing.” Living by faith means moment-to-moment dependence, trusting God in the pressure and the peace, in the victories and defeats. It’s what Paul echoed in Romans 1:17 (CSB, above), when he described the life of the believer as “from faith to faith.”
Faith isn’t reserved for a salvation experience years ago. It’s about waking up today and choosing trust again. It’s about giving God your anger after a bad game, your insecurity when your role changes, your joy after a win. It’s living aware that the God who called you won’t abandon you.
Whatever season you’re in — training, triumph or trial — your next step isn’t taken alone. Live by faith. Then take the next step, from faith to faith.
