As the 2025 NFL Draft came to a close, there’s no question that the biggest surprise was the slide of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Heading into the draft, many analysts had Sanders going early in the first round. Some even had Sanders being the No. 1 overall pick. What followed in the draft was arguably the most shocking fall in the history of the NFL Draft.

Not only did Sanders not get drafted in the first round, he fell out of the first four rounds and eventually was picked in the fifth round at No. 144 by the Cleveland Browns. Whether Sanders should’ve gone in the first round or not is still up for debate, but the main point is that almost everyone expected something to happen, and not only did it not happen at the expected time, it looked drastically different.

Every follower of Christ can probably relate to this narrative at one point or another in their own lives. It seems like everything is lining up for something to take place and, in an instant, things take an unexpected detour. Questions begin to arise as to why this would happen, or we’re wondering what is God doing. These are natural responses, but so often it’s easy to forget the other times God came through when things didn’t go as planned.

There have been other notable draft slides. Think back to 2004 and Ben Roethlisberger, who seemed like a shoo-in to go to the Giants before he fell to the Steelers late in the first round. Just a year later, Aaron Rodgers looked to be the next quarterback for the 49ers before he was passed by 23 teams until Green Bay picked him. Both of those players had their plans and expectations altered without notice, but both of them ended up having incredibly successful careers, winning Super Bowls that they may not have won had they played for a different team.

Will this unexpected slide bring greater prosperity for Sanders? It’s obviously too early to tell. But one thing is certain in our own lives: In times of unexpected change, every follower of Christ can take solace knowing that God is in control of everything and His timing is perfect. He has come through every time before and He will do it again.
