“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” — Romans 12:1

In the world of sports, we’re taught to push through pain, fight for every inch, and take control of the game. As a coach, I have said many times, “No pain, no gain!” and “Never surrender!” in the heat of a hard practice session.
But when it comes to walking with Christ, the path to victory often looks upside-down: It starts with surrender. Romans 12 (above) reminds us that the proper response to God’s mercy isn’t striving, it’s surrender. Not performance, but sacrifice. Paul says to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.” That means we don’t just lay it down once, we lay it down daily — our plans, our pride, our need for control, our fears … all of it.
Surender is not passive, it’s intentional. Every day we choose to let go of our own agendas and say, “God, I trust You more than I trust me. I chose today to move toward the freedom that You have for me.”
That includes how we train, how we lead, how we treat our teammates, and how we respond when the scoreboard or our circumstances aren’t in our favor. Surrender shapes not just our actions, but our identity. We begin to live in a way that delights His heart. That’s what worship really is: offering ourselves completely to Him.
Victory in Christ begins where self ends — at the altar of surrender.
