When a quarterback gets a football he has the option to throw it, hold on and run with it, or hand it off. To throw it, he needs to let go of the ball as soon as possible. If he runs with it, he needs to hold on tight. And if he chooses to hand it off and doesn’t loosen his grip on the ball at the right time, he could fumble it or get tackled.

In our walk with the Lord, we have a choice to hold onto problems or struggles, or release them to God. The only difference from football is, if we hold on, we’ll have no peace and we could lose yardage in our spiritual life. But when we let go and give it to God, our hands are free to do whatever we need to do for His Kingdom.

Just like my grandson who used to make fists and couldn’t hold onto his bottle, or when he grabbed his hair and wouldn’t let go when he pulled it, he had to learn to open his fist and loosen his grip. When we loosen our grip, we can serve Him freely (Psalm 90:17, above), praise Him freely (Psalm 134:2), fold our hands in prayer (Proverbs 6:10), and clap and rejoice in worship (Psalm 47:1).

God’s hands are always open for us. Our names are inscribed on His palms (Isaiah 49:15b-16). God is aware of and concerned with our daily lives and circumstances, small problems and big. We just need to loosen our grip and trust Him to choose what’s best for us.
