Daily Devotional: Wednesday, September 3 – When Everyone Else Has Given Up

“While he was still talking, some people came from the leader’s house and told him, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?'” — Mark 5:35 (MSG)

The words above must have shattered Jairus. He had risked everything to get Jesus there in time — and now it was too late. People began preparing for a funeral. The hope he had just moments ago was drowned by the noise of grief. But Jesus spoke seven powerful words: “Don’t listen to them; just trust me” (Mark 5:36).

Athletes hear voices too. The doubters, the critics, the ones who say it’s over. “You’re too old.” “You’re not good enough.” “The game has passed you by.” Those voices grow louder when the scoreboard looks hopeless. But great athletes — and great followers of Jesus — learn to tune them out.

Jesus stepped into the house. He ignored the mourners. He took the girl by the hand. And what everyone else said was impossible … happened.

When others stop believing, will you still trust? When the crowd says “give up,” will you listen to the voice that says, “Just trust me”? That’s what faith looks like — clinging to Jesus when everyone else has moved on. Because He’s not done.

Reflection: What voices are you listening to? What might happen if you choose to trust Jesus instead?
