“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10

It was race chase day at cross-country practice. About 45-50 kids from sixth to 12th grade were running a two-mile course to gauge their fitness level early in the season. Several of the kids were nervous about how they would perform. It can be intimidating, especially for some of the newer kids to the program.
As practice was about to begin, a parent showed up — a dad whose young daughter was newer to running and new to the team. He wanted to see how things worked at practice and how his daughter was doing. He quickly introduced himself to the coaching staff, and as a runner also, asked if he could come along for the workout.
At the starting line, there he was right beside his daughter. He wasn’t sitting on the sidelines or a face in the crowd. He was present for every step, every uphill climb and every downhill descent. He was there with words of encouragement, but also words of instruction. Did it make a difference? Without a doubt. She ran way better than her projected time based on earlier workouts in the season.
It was a sweet picture to me: a loving father there to encourage his daughter each step of the way. Yes, it was great that she ran faster, but to me, what was really special was that it was an opportunity for this father to remind his daughter that he truly cared.
It made me think of God, and a thought came to mind — we can go further with the Father.
I hear a mantra sometimes where people say, “I can do hard things.” This truth can go a little further: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). He will never leave me nor forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6).
May we all run further with the Father.
