Mark Richt is currently an analyst for ESPN’s ACC Network, but many people didn’t know who he was before he designed and implemented the “hurry-up offense” as the offensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles. Though he was instrumental in many Florida State victories as an assistant coach, the greatest moment of his life was when head coach Bobby Bowden challenged the whole team and staff to believe in Christ after the tragic death of one of the players. Richt prayed to receive Christ the next day with Coach Bowden.

After a successful coaching career at Georgia and Miami, Richt is now semi-retired but gives a lot of time to charity work. He works to increase awareness of Parkinson’s Disease and Crohn’s Disease since he has Parkinson’s and his granddaughter, Jadyn, was born with Crohn’s. His example is an inspiration.

We are wise to follow those who set good examples, especially the example of others who put God first and give to God on a regular basis. After Noah and his family spent more than a year on a big boat with animals, it would’ve been easy to do many other things besides worship God when they finally got their feet back on land. However, Noah was so grateful to God for preserving his life during the worldwide flood, he was eager to give an offering to God. As soon as he departed the Ark, he kept God first in his life and built an altar. “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it” (Genesis 8:20).

In our hearts, we know it’s important to keep churches going to teach adults and children about God. We should be helping the needy in our community and also giving continuous support to missions in faraway places. Even so, we tend to forget God and His work. In the Old Testament, we read about the Israelites forgetting God — sometimes for years — as we can do too. The Lord tried to keep them on track by warning them about it before it happened. “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day” (Deuteronomy 8:10-11).

Though we may love God, we don’t always love the Lord the most. Many people and things compete for our attention. The shiny stuff in this world tends to distract us. So we need periodic reminders to strengthen our faith in Jesus. When John wrote to the church in Ephesus, he spoke about appreciating their labor for God and their solid beliefs, but he saw one basic problem: They drifted away from the Lord and weren’t as close to Him as before. “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4). They had forgotten to keep Him first.

Keep God first in your life, and you will not be able to forget Him. When we stray, God may confront us but He always welcomes us back close to His side if we humble ourselves and return.

— Bill Kent, Pastor of Memorial Baptist Church, Sylvania, Georgia
