“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” — John 14:16-17 (ESV)

As Christians, we are called to live in daily submission to the Spirit of God. We are commanded in Ephesians 5:18 to “be filled with the Spirit.” The word “filled” carries the idea of being “controlled” by the Spirit. This is illustrated earlier in the same verse where it is compared to someone being under the influence of an addictive substance. The wording also indicates that being controlled by the Spirit is a conscious decision to be made daily, even repeatedly throughout each day.
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus spoke about the coming of the Holy Spirit and His influence on our lives. John 14:16 (ESV) states, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”
So, what does that look like? Perhaps an athletic comparison can help us.
The word “helper” in Greek means “one who walks alongside.” In the sporting world, what do we call a person who comes alongside an athlete? We are to yield to the Holy Spirit as the ultimate Coach in our lives. He gets to call the plays, determine how best to use us, pair us up with teammates, encourage us, make adjustments in us, etc.
Start today. Allow the Spirit to coach you as you follow Jesus in this life.
