“Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’” — Luke 9:62

Recently, I got to do chapel through video conferencing with former NBA players now playing in Asia and Oceania. One of the players at chapel told me that his agent was preparing to negotiate a new contract for him. He told me that one factor in signing a long-term, top-dollar deal overseas was the NBA clause.
The NBA clause is a detail in a player’s contract that allows a player to sign with an NBA team in the middle of that foreign team’s season. If a player was willing to leave the NBA clause out and was totally committed to playing for that overseas team for the entirety of the contract, he would get paid more and sign a longer contract. In other words, there are benefits to going “all in.”
Jesus’ call to follow Him, better known as discipleship, is an “all in” relationship. There are no out clauses in His call to discipleship. There is no career clause. There is no girlfriend or boyfriend clause. There is no sports clause. There is no injury clause. There is no better offer clause.
In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus gives three examples of people He has called to go “all in” with Him, but all three give Jesus an out clause. One uses the “homeless” clause. The other two use the “family” clause.
In your desire to follow the Lord Jesus, do you have an out clause? What is keeping you from going “all in” with Jesus?
