“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.” — Matthew 1:19 (NKJV)

I’m in a season of change in my life. After 20-plus years in public accounting, I needed a break. I thought with a new season it might be good to start a new reading plan in my devotion time. New season. New Testament. It made sense to me, so I turned to Matthew 1, which felt like perfect timing with the Christmas season upon us.
The verse above stood out in a new way. What was it like for Joseph? How did he hear about Mary’s pregnancy?
I read this passage and thought, “This is a man’s man.” Most men would react in anger or pride or jealousy, but Joseph is noted for being a “just man.” He had to have been hurt, but still he is thinking of what is good for Mary. Isn’t that what true love does? It sacrifices for the good of others even at great personal cost.
I think of my own husband as I talked about my desire to quit my job. He saw the stress I was under. He supported the decision even though he knew it would be a financial hit. I saw him contemplating picking up a second job. I think of how he has a job now that is difficult, but still he sacrifices so our kids can have the blessing of a Christian education.
We live in a culture that celebrates fame, wealth and power, but as I read of Joseph and thought of my own husband, they are the real heroes. Ordinary men upheld by an extraordinary God.
I’m outnumbered in a house of all boys (which I love). You can imagine on movie night that my pick isn’t likely to be what they want to watch. And while agreeing on a movie may feel like “Mission Impossible,” one thing my husband and I can agree on is that we want our children to live by the truth of Micah 6:8. I like how the New American Standard Bible version translates it: “He has told you, mortal one, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (NASB).
I’m not sure what’s next for our family, but my husband and I want to follow God’s order for things. “X-Men” may have been a box office hit, but I think Matthew 6:33 is the real X-factor.
For now, I’ll just pause and thank God for giving me a husband who definitely qualifies for “The Justice League,” and while I’m no Wonder Woman, I do live in awe and wonder of our great God.
