Every major contact sport has terminology associated with big hits. In football it’s “getting de-cleated,” in rugby it’s “getting dumped,” and in hockey it’s a “yard sale.” A yard sale refers to a hit so big the player’s gear (stick, gloves and helmet) goes flying, like items scattered at a yard sale.

Although the closest Jesus ever got to playing hockey was when He walked on water, it’s fair to say He was an expert of spiritual yard sales. Jesus often would have encounters with people that hit so hard they would leave completely changed. In most circumstances, they would even sell everything they had to follow Him.

In Scripture, we are given several of these encounters to learn from, each marking the individual talking to Jesus in a unique way. Our passage today, Matthew 9:9-13, focuses on Matthew — a man who turned his back on his own people for profit by becoming a tax collector.

Matthew may have had all the earthly possessions he could ever ask for, but spiritually he was empty and alone. That changed the moment Jesus invited Matthew to follow Him. Matthew was hit with real love and truth, and chose to sell everything to spend the rest of his life following Jesus.

Oftentimes we may feel like Matthew did before surrendering his life to Jesus — full of the things of this world, but empty inside. Yet there is good news: Jesus offers the same spiritual yard sale to us that was offered to Matthew. Regardless of where you find yourself today, you can choose to follow Jesus and your life will change.
