“Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” — Hebrews 12:3

When talking about perseverance or endurance, the conversation must begin with Jesus. He is the ultimate example. The Greek word for “consider” in Hebrews 12:3 (above) means to “draw a comparison.” In fact, we get the word “analogy” from it. We can find strength in persevering through tough times by remembering how Jesus endured the cross and why He did it.
On the Internet, one can find “A Medical Description of the Crucifixion” by physician C. Truman Davis. In part he writes, “Hours of this limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-rending cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from his lacerated back as he moves up and down against the rough timber. Then another agony begins. A deep crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart.”
In addition to the physical suffering, consider the spiritual anguish of being “made sin” for our sake (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Where does the motivation come from to persevere? For Jesus, Hebrews 12:2 states that He found joy in looking beyond the cross to the salvation that would be provided for those who trust in Him. A Christian is not expected to claim joy from a trial, but a Christian can maintain joy through a trial as God’s purposes are revealed and fulfilled.
