Daily Devotional: Monday, May 11 – The Devil’s Destiny

“He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” — John 8:44b

Doc Rivers was an outstanding player in the NBA for 13 seasons and selected as an All-Star in 1988 for his stellar performance on the court. Afterward, he got into coaching with the Orlando Magic, and led the Boston Celtics to the NBA championship in 2008. He’s since coached the L.A. Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and most recently the Milwaukee Bucks when he announced his retirement in April.

Even the best coaches struggle and come across hard times. No coach wins every game or has a playoff-caliber team every year, and many will change teams voluntarily or be forced out. No matter how great the coach, they will face difficulties and temptations just like the rest of us.

Encountering hard times is nothing new to our generation. It goes back to the beginning of time, where we see the snake at work to make life hard and complicated (John 8:44, above). After God made a perfect place for Adam and Eve to live with fruits and vegetables, flowing rivers and peaceful animals, Satan worked on corrupting the first couple (Genesis 3).

Because the devil’s lies sound true, human beings often fall into the trap before we realize what happened. If Eve and Adam had stuck to what God told them, they wouldn’t have had to grow old or endure any problems. However, the deception of the devil pulled Eve and Adam away from God. Even though God commanded Adam and Eve to stay away from one tree, the devil tricked them.

If we think about it, the devil is the worst scam artist who ever existed. He makes everything sound sweet and satisfying, but it tastes bitter and destroys eventually. Even mature religious leaders lose some battles to the devil as we fight against him daily. None of us go undefeated against the evil enemy.

Believe it or not, Peter listened to Satan and was rebuked by Jesus (Matthew 16:21-23). Peter thought death by crucifixion would be beneath the King above all other kings, but Jesus had to die for our sins, and Satan used Peter to try to talk Jesus out of going to the cross.

Throughout our lives, Satan continues to promise power and pleasure, but everything he offers is temporary. It’s better to listen to God because the Lord is always looking out for our best interests. The devil has never cared about us, which is why Jesus reminds us that Satan wants to steal everything good from us (John 10:10).

As we live the Christian life, we can get bruised and battered by the battles with evil forces, and give into temptation sometimes. We want the devil to leave us alone, but he comes after us every day with tricks to pull us away from God’s plan. But God comforts us by promising to get rid of the sinister one some day (Romans 16:20a).

We don’t need to worry if Satan scored today, because he will lose everything on God’s schedule in the future.
