Other than Jesus, Job is probably the Bible’s greatest example of steadfastness or perseverance. James 5:11 (ESV) says of Job’s steadfastness, “Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”

Job suffered immense pain and loss in his life. He experienced levels of abandonment from family and friends. At times, he makes the case that God has allowed him to be unjustly treated. The book contains legal language as if one was considering a lawsuit against an opponent, yet through it all, Job remained steadfast in his love and reverence of God.

The reasons for Job’s pain and suffering are indicated in Chapters 1-2 of the Book of Job. However, there is no indication that Job, despite experiencing a restoration of much at the end of the book, knew for himself in this lifetime “the purpose of the Lord” in his suffering. It often helps us persevere when we understand God’s plan behind hardships; however, many times we must persevere through faith.

How do we foster and develop perseverance? Perhaps we get some direction in the “love passage” of 1 Corinthians 13. The last quality of love listed in Verse 7 (ESV) states that love “endures all things.” As one’s love for Christ grows, one’s perseverance in Christ is strengthened.

We may not always have an immediate understanding of the purpose of the trials in our lives, but our perseverance through the trials is grounded in the Lord’s love for us and our love for Him.
