Professional athletes are notorious for their dedication to a highly regimented daily routine. They go to bed and get up at set times, eat certain foods at certain times, and even take pregame naps at specific times. Everything they do is driven by the distinct goal of being at their physical and mental peak, in order to perform athletically at the highest level.

As Christians, our daily regimen must also include a mindset and a specific set of activities so that we may be at our spiritual peak, ready to respond at any moment as disciples of Christ.

You have a problem with Jesus if you are a Christian hobbyist or a part-time lover. As we go through the day, we should always keep an open ear, listening for the Lord’s voice. This is why it is so crucial that we learn the Word of God for ourselves. The more we know and understand His Word, the better our ability to hear His voice and “make the right read” in every situation.

These daily regimens are not just things we do so we can check them off the list. Your game-day routine has a singular purpose of helping you be at your best when the game is on. Likewise, these spiritual habits are about helping you become an effective and productive disciple for Christ. It’s not about the routines; it’s about the relationship.

How’s your daily routine? How much of it is driven by your relationship with the Lord?

— Jerry Birch, Cleveland Cavaliers chaplain
