Sport speaks a universal language that brings society together like no other. Unity takes the form of passionate crowds of people cheering and wearing the same colors or jerseys supporting their favorite players. Religious views, politics, race and other differences matter none when we’re all gathered together rooting for our team to win.

What a blessing God has made available for us to experience. But what a perversion the enemy uses to deceive others, leading them away from King Jesus.

As athletes and coaches, the limelight can become addicting. Social media has enhanced the paparazzi attack because the access has been made easily available. People noticing you becomes a burden after a tough loss, but when the winning streak is going, everyone wants the spotlight.

Holding on to every word shared by your favorite athlete seems valuable because of a modern society where entertainers are idolized for excelling at their craft. However, what is said should be more emphasized than who said it. I pray athletes and coaches cultivate a humble heart posture, especially when cameras are rolling and questions are tossed around. Win, lose or draw, always find ways to give God glory. His glory, our good!

Constantly boast in the Lord for His wisdom, His strength and His blessings made available to you through sport. Be reminded that no one is self-made. God created us all, and it’s our responsibility to always redirect the glory back to Him.

Next time you’re given the mic, what are you going to boast about?

— Monique Fuiava, University of Oregon women’s chaplain
