“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27

In sports and in life, everyone wants to win and no one likes to lose. Even so, every sports franchise goes through some lean years occasionally. Coaches like John Fox are valuable to struggling teams. During his career, he helped the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears put away poor and destructive policies and develop a winning culture after several disappointing years under previous leadership.

Though a new coach or general manager does sometimes improve an organization, often a new mindset is more important than the names of the leaders. If shifting blame, a lack of necessary resources, and backbiting are common, any organization tends to decline.

The same is true in Christian communities. Just like rebuilding seasons can be tough for a struggling team, rebuilding a struggling church can be tougher than new construction. Many times we see churches opting to plant a new church in communities where established churches already exist. Sometimes the older churches are declining in membership and young adults aren’t coming alongside the veteran worshippers to help the congregation remain strong and active.

In either case — a new church or a declining one — every house of worship develops the same problems over time. It’s difficult to retain the same zeal we had when we first met Christ and we can fall into unhealthy habits. It’s also impossible to avoid all misunderstandings, and those often cause at least a few people to leave the church. Peace is a good goal but it often slips away from us. Selfishness will get in the way of peace every time.

We may be seeing smaller numbers in many churches, but we won’t gain one new member by criticizing others. Instead, we need to just deliver the Gospel and love others. Even the apostles saw a low level of commitment at times. We may see that too, but we shouldn’t get discouraged. We simply need to keep on announcing the Good News and building the body of Christ together. We can’t repay God for our salvation, but we have a duty to share what we know about God (Romans 1:14-15, NLT).

Whether rebuilding a team or a Christian community, our focus should be unity and living the Gospel over selfishness.

— Bill Kent, Pastor of Memorial Baptist Church, Sylvania, Georgia
