SS PODCAST: Olympic wrestler Helen Maroulis on finding joy in heartache, her walk with God

THIS IS THE SPORTS SPECTRUM PODCAST
WITH JASON ROMANO, FEATURING HELEN MAROULIS

Helen Maroulis is an Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler. In 2016, she became the first American to win a gold medal in women’s freestyle wrestling at the Olympics. In 2021, she was back in the Games and became the first U.S. women’s wrestler to win two Olympic medals, as she took home the bronze.

Born in Rockville, Maryland, Maroulis as a high school freshman became the first female wrestler to place at the Maryland state wrestling championships. At the age-group level, Maroulis was a three-time Junior World medalist (bronze in 2008 and 2010, silver in 2011).

She is featured in the upcoming documentary “Helen | Believe,” produced by Religion of Sports, Reserve Entertainment and Chris Pratt’s Indivisible Productions. It highlights Maroulis’ journey to her Olympic gold, as well as her road to recovery after suffering multiple concussions.

Today on the podcast, we talk to Maroulis about her new documentary, staying humble during achievement, finding joy in the difficult times, why starting a prayer journal helped her grow closer to God, and learning to play the harp.
