With 2023 coming to a close, Sports Spectrum is highlighting our most-viewed stories of the year.
The past few years of Jonathan Isaac’s life have been anything but typical for an NBA player. For one, he hasn’t played all that much.
The Orlando Magic forward hyperextended his left knee on Jan. 1, 2020, and was expected to miss the rest of the 2019-20 season. Instead, he missed only the next 31 games before the season was paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. But on Aug. 2, in his second game back, Isaac tore his ACL in the NBA bubble. He spent the next two seasons rehabbing.
He made his long-awaited return on Jan. 23, 2023, after 904 days of rehab. Unfortunately, he appeared in only 11 games before a torn adductor muscle ended his 2023 season.
Through all the unexpected time away from the game, however, Isaac remained quite busy. He wrote a book, “Why I Stand,” which was released in May 2022 and became a bestseller. Then at the end of July 2023, he officially launched a clothing brand called UNITUS. It’s a leisure and sportswear brand inspired by Issac’s strong faith in God, and the brand’s motto is “true greatness.”
“We know that true greatness is found in none other than Jesus Christ,” Isaac said at the event. “That is what makes us truly great, and so we can step into the world as we are with boldness and confidence and say, ‘I am truly great. I don’t need to measure myself by worldly standards.’”
We published a story on Aug. 1 about the 25-year-old launching his apparel brand, and it caught traction immediately. It ranks No. 2 among our most-viewed stories in 2023:
