The biggest party in the Cotton Bowl every year happens on the second week of October with the Red River Showdown. The burnt orange of the Texas Longhorns take on the crimson red of the Oklahoma Sooners. Last year the Sooners won 45-40 in a shootout. Will the same thing happen this year?
Our picks have struggled this year, so hopefully this week, we can step it up and start to earn some respect. To the predictions we go!
Jason Romano: No. 12 Oklahoma 42 – Texas 24 – This rivalry might be the best in college football but the Sooners are head and shoulders above the Longhorns. Expect a big game from Baker Mayfield.
UPSET: LSU 20 – No. 10 Auburn 17 – LSU rebounded from an embarrassing loss to Troy two weeks ago to beat Florida in Gainesville. They return home with confidence, and I think their defense steps up in a big way to pull off the upset against a good Auburn team.
Justin Adams: No. 12 Oklahoma 35 – Texas 31 – One of the best rivalries in the land will be new for both head coaches who are looking to stay in the Big 12 picture. I would love to pick Texas here in the upset, but I’m seeing this one in crimson glasses. Sooners in a close one.
UPSET: No. 25 Navy 37 – Memphis 34 – It’s not often a ranked opponent is the underdog, but Memphis is a 2.5 point favorite at home against Navy. But, for the first time since 2004 Navy has started the season 5-0, beating Air Force last week 48-45 as QB Zach Abey led the Midshipmen on a game-winning 75 yard drive. Abey is fourth in the nation in rushing and Navy leads the NCAA in rushing as well. The Midshipmen are special and will beat Memphis on the road to set up a huge matchup against Central Florida next week.
Jon Ackerman: No. 12 Oklahoma 45 – Texas 30 – The Sooners need a victory to get back on their path to the playoffs, and a win over longtime rival Texas will do the trick. Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield owns the best passer rating in the land.
UPSET: LSU 34 – No. 10 Auburn 30 – LSU was stunned by Troy, then escaped Florida with a win when the Gators missed a game-tying extra point. That trend wouldn’t seem to suggest an upset of Auburn, but we all know football doesn’t always make sense.
