NFL players Josh Norman, Demario Davis team up to help children detained at border

Although President Donald Trump’s recent order to reunite families separated by criminal prosecutions for illegal immigration has enabled a dissipation of the United States’ “zero-tolerance” policy along the Texas-Mexico border, the Washington Post reports that something like 2,000 children are still being detained without their parents.

However, amid the ongoing conflict, some of the recently released families weren’t without support — thanks to a pair of NFL veterans.

As the Post and SB Nation reported, Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman and New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis teamed up this week to “save the world, one little kid at a time.” In doing so, they partnered with the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), made a 3 a.m. trip to Walmart and stocked up on toys and backpacks to deliver to kids of families fresh out of U.S. Border Patrol detainment.

“We are called to love others, love is action,” Davis told Sports Spectrum today. “We put ourselves in their shoes and asked, ‘What would we need if we were them?’ and tried to get and give that.”

By the end of their excursion, Davis and Norman had reportedly delivered dozens of toys and backpacks, as well as 20 boxes of pizza, to the border families.

Both Davis and Norman have been vocal about their Christian faith and are no strangers to community service.

The latter once dedicated part of his $75-million contract with the Redskins to aiding South Carolina-area churches, whereas Davis, formerly of the New York Jets, has long talked about valuing God and Christ-like service over success, money and fame. Once an intern with United Way, Davis has helped implement community development programs in his Mississippi hometown and pledged to create ways for NFL players to impact their own communities.
