NFL leading tackler Jordyn Brooks vows to ‘tap into’ his faith during Dolphins’ struggles

Sunday was not the first time Miami Dolphins linebacker and team captain Jordyn Brooks faced the media after a disappointing performance. It also wasn’t the first time he pointed to his faith in God as a source of encouragement during his team’s 1-6 start.

Following Miami’s 31-6 defeat to the Cleveland Browns (2-5), Brooks said he would lean on the Lord and vowed to stay consistent when he shows up to the team’s facility every day.

“When things come up on you like this, I think you’ve got to tap into your faith,” he told the media. “And that’s what I’m going to do. Try to show up every day, be the same person. But this one hurts.”

Brooks, who turned 28 on Tuesday, registered nine total tackles in Sunday’s loss, giving him an NFL-high 75 through the first seven weeks. He is on track for his fifth consecutive season with more than 110 tackles.

A first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 out of Texas Tech, Brooks joined the Dolphins on a three-year deal last year. He has played every defensive snap so far in 2025.

In an interview with the Sun Sentinel last September, Brooks talked about his faith journey and how it’s impacted his life. While he grew up in a Christian home, Brooks has started getting more serious about his faith the past few years. He shared that in that time, life has gotten harder, not easier.

“When you sign up to live for Jesus, it’s not a cupcake walk,” he said. “It comes with pain, it comes with frustration, it comes with hardship. So that’s why the Bible says, ‘Endure to the end. Fight the good fight of faith.’ So that’s what this life is, but it’s worth it in the end.”

What Brooks wants people to understand is that he is never alone when he faces adversity. It’s in those moments when he sees God show up the most.

“Through your weakness, God is stronger,” he told the Sun Sentinel. “And so I’ve been able to deal with some of the things that I’ve had to deal with because of God being there right with me. And so without that, I wouldn’t be able to stand.

“And so that’s the point I always want to make, if nobody hears nothing else.”

The Houston, Texas, native has worn shirts referencing his faith and mentioned it in interviews throughout his career. Following Miami’s last-second loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6, Brooks shared a Bible verse — Proverbs 17:17 — with the team: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

“This affects our livelihood,” he explained that day at his postgame press conference while wearing a “Jesus saves” hoodie. “You lose, you get cut, get traded, get fired — all these things. And so, I called it adversity for that reason. I think now is a chance to be a brother to my teammates, and that’s what I was sharing with them — this is where a brother is born, when stuff is hard.”

Even as his team struggles, Brooks finds peace in knowing that God remains in control. His job is to surrender to the Lord’s will.

“There’s a Bible verse that says, ‘Be anxious for nothing, and instead be thankful, and through prayer and petition give all thankfulness to God, and the peace of God will transcend your heart,’” he told the Sun Sentinel, referring to Philippians 4:6-7.

“And I think that verse right there for me, that’s where I get the peace from. When God is literally telling me not to worry about nothing, to cast all my cares on Him and just go do what I’ve been blessed to do. And the results will be what they are. That’s the truth right there. And without that, I’d probably be a wreck, without that foundation.”

The Dolphins visit the Atlanta Falcons (3-3) this Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET.
