“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10 (ESV)

What Matters Most

One of the most striking things I have ever heard Tony Dungy say was, “If I stay here and live with you that’s good; if I die and go to Heaven that’s better.” It took me a minute to really hear and understand what he was saying. He wakes up every morning and approaches each day with this outlook: He’d rather be in heaven, but if he’s not, he’ll make the most of today.

I have a hard time with this line of thought, because I love my wife and would not ever want to be away from her, my family or my friends. But I need to remember that the life Christ has given me for eternity is far greater than the one I live each day.

The salvation we receive from Jesus is not a “Golden Ticket” nor is it an eject button to leave this earth. However, it is a guarantee of something greater than what we experience today. Knowing this, we should enjoy the days we have, knowing that something greater is yet to come.

Think about this either as an athlete or in your day-to-day life: You should approach each practice/day with the enthusiasm as though it is your first, and the urgency as though it is your last.
