Sports Spectrum Daily Devotional: Tuesday, December 31

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)

Pressing Forward

In sports, the saying “there’s always next year” is common among fans of teams that don’t win championships. As a fan of a certain NFL team that hasn’t won a Super Bowl in a very long time, I’ve come to live out that saying every winter.

“There’s always next year.”

With it being December 31, we do this in our own lives. Whatever we’ve gone through in 2019, many of us look to next year with anticipation that this coming year is going to be much better than the previous 12 months.

The Apostle Paul echoed the idea of forgetting what is in the past and pressing forward, but his desire was not to simply live a better life. Instead, he aimed to live a life that strives for Jesus Christ. He calls it the “upward call of God in Christ.”

This 2020, I pray you press on toward that same goal — the goal of living a life pursuing Jesus Christ every single day.
