Get the Picture
Larry Munson was the University of Georgia football play-by-play announcer from 1966 to 2008. He was a native of Minnesota who found his way to the Deep South and a job calling college football games after a brief stint in minor league baseball. He endeared himself to fans of the “Red and Black” several years into his career when it became apparent, through his enthusiasm, he cared about Georgia being victorious over their rivals.
One of Munson’s well-known phrases was “Get the picture.” He would start his time on air with a detailed description of Georgia’s red jerseys and silver pants or “britches.” He would go on to describe the opposition’s helmets and jerseys, as well as how the wind was blowing and the reaction of the spectators. This introduction paved the way for phrases like “Hunker down, you guys!” and “The stadium is worse than bonkers!” and “He ran right out of his shoes!” — among many others that live on in Georgia football lore.
As talented sports broadcasters paint a clear picture of what takes place in a game, God speaks clearly in His Word about the promises He has made to Christians. He promised to send a Savior to Israel hundreds of years before Jesus was born (Micah 5:2). Jesus promised the disciples before His ascension that He is always with believers through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). At the end of the Scriptures, He again paints a beautiful description of His second coming through the Apostle John in Revelation 19:11: “I saw Heaven open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and makes war.”
When you read God’s Word, you will “get the picture.”
