“For everything in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — comes not from the Father but from the world.” — 1 John 2:16

Clayton Kershaw is one of the greatest pitchers of our time, but even he has never won a ballgame on his own. He needs a quality catcher to frame his pitches. He needs excellent fielders behind him. He relies on his team’s hitters to score runs, and he has to trust the coaches to do their jobs. Likewise, fellowship with God and others only happens in community with other believers. And fellowship is essential for our spiritual growth.

We live in a hyper-individualistic society. The love of the world and its system captivates our affections and governs our desires. How? It promises to satisfy legitimate desires in illegitimate ways.

In 1 John 2:16, John lists the three specific ways: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life. We desire food, but eat to gluttony. We see what others have, covet it and pursue what isn’t legitimate to have. We take pride in possessions or power to impress others.

But when we live in community with other believers, we can face these temptations together. I have brothers who will call me out when I say or do something that’s inappropriate. I can open the Bible each day to hear from my Master and to study Scripture with others.

God knew what He was doing when He designed us to live in community with one another.
