Last year marked the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. From the very beginning, the core value of the organization has been, “Friendship is essential to the soul.” Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto. The personal need for true unity is God-ordained. He wired each of us that way on purpose. One way to look at today’s verse is that a true friend constantly has your back, no matter what, even more than your own blood brother, who may be what we call “sometimey.”

Another way to see it is that you only know who your true friends are when you’re down and out. First Corinthians 12:25-26 says that “there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

We should be so confident about our God in us and our God for us that we have no problem being used by God in promoting others, being a part of their development and success without fear of being left behind. The Lord blesses people like that far beyond any current circumstance!

Above all, our actions toward one another must be genuine. Without true unity, in real time, we lose capacity in reaching our collective goal.
