One of the most anticipated joys of summer for baseball fans is the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York. As of July 2023, 20,447 players have made it to the major leagues since 1876, but only a few hundred have achieved the status of being enshrined into baseball’s highest honor of achievement — the Baseball Hall of Fame.

There are many factors that contribute to an athlete’s success, but a major factor is commitment. There are commitments made by individual coaches from little league and high school, to nameless coaches in the minor leagues who spent hours with the young prospects, helping to improve their skills. Commitments by mom and dad, siblings and friends are credited with helping athletes keep going and never give up. Often, wives and children are recognized for the sacrifices they made during the baseball season.

Every year, as athletes are inducted into the Hall of Fame, you’ll hear the same recurring theme honoring and acknowledging the enormous effect commitment has had on the career of the inductee, including their own commitment to being their best and not giving up despite all the hard times.

Success in our spiritual lives must also involve commitment. As children of God, we are to be in total obedience to Him. This is only possible by committing everything we do to the Lord. We are not perfect and will fail, sinning at times. But as the psalmist wrote, when we commit everything to God and trust Him, He will help us (Psalm 37:5, above).

Just as Hall of Famers achieve success through their commitment and the support of those who committed part of their lives to help them, we also have the Lord ready to help us as we commit everything to Him. Now that’s a pretty good deal!
