“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8
What God Requires
When I played for the Baltimore Orioles in 1990, one of my favorite coaches was Johnny Oates, who was the bench coach for Frank Robinson. In the middle of the season, Frank was suspended for three games and Johnny took over his duties as the manager. Johnny met with all of the pitchers and explained what each of our roles would be over the course of his three days at the helm. Each of us knew what would be expected of us and we were able to plan accordingly.
I have often used the phrase “unfulfilled expectations lead to frustration.” That applies in a marriage, in business, in the Church or on a team. When an expectation is clearly communicated, it is much easier to fulfill.
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8
In Micah 6:8, God clearly states what He requires from His followers. He expects us to walk humbly with Him and we will be His ambassadors who extend justice and mercy. We will walk alongside brothers and sisters to help right the wrongs that have been perpetuated in their lives. We will enter others’ painful situations, showing them the love and mercy we have received from our precious Savior.
It’s a clear expectation that we now need to fulfill.
