There’s just something special about the start of baseball season. The crisp spring air, the crack of the bat hitting the ball, and the renewed hope that my team will return to glory — it creates a level of adrenaline and excitement that I look forward to all winter.

I was never as good at baseball as I wanted to be, but it has long remained my favorite sport to follow. The pace, the strategy, the numbers, the drama — I love it all. Unlike other sports where one or two players can dominate most of the game, the game of baseball is structured so that each player has a chance at the plate to make a difference for their team. When their spot in the order comes up, it’s on them to produce. When the ball is hit their way, they have to make the play.

It’s a team sport, but so many aspects of it are individually focused to where it can feel like an individual sport. It’s a lot of pressure for players to step up and come through for their team when the spotlight is on them. Players can’t shy away from the moment. They may not always produce, but they’re expected to give every ounce of effort they have.

As Christians, we too are called to step up in our lives and live in a way that honors God, in every situation, whether we’re at home, work, school or playing a game like baseball (1 Corinthians 10:31, above). Whether the outcome of our effort is a metaphorical home run or a strikeout, it doesn’t matter. We’re called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our soul and all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5).

In sports and in life, we will always have the opportunity to choose to take shortcuts or to play with integrity, perseverance and faith, knowing that every action, no matter how small, can glorify God. In the same way, a baseball player’s attitude toward his teammates, the game itself, and his opponents can reflect the heart of a believer — humble, patient and kind.

Think of one area of your life where you feel you can step up to the plate in a new way — whether it’s in a relationship, your work or a personal goal. Commit to doing it for God’s glory, knowing He is with you, guiding every swing of the bat.
