“’Truly I tell you,’ Jesus replied, ‘no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields — along with persecutions — and in the age to come eternal life.’” — Mark 10:29-30

One afternoon, I finished a lunch meeting with a G League player for the Iowa Wolves and we walked out to the parking lot together. I think we all have this stereotype that all professional athletes are very wealthy and drive flashy cars.
This player began walking toward two cars in the parking lot — one was a very expensive SUV, and the other was a rusty, old, compact car. I was shocked when he got in the compact car and drove off. I assumed the luxury SUV was his, but then I remembered that most G League players make a salary of $40,500 for the six- to seven-month season.
After playing in the G League for a few seasons, here’s the decision many players have to make: Do I stay in the G League for a lower salary per season hoping to get called up to the NBA, or do I play overseas and make 10 times as much money, but probably close the door on ever playing in the NBA?
It’s a question any of us may face at some point: Cash in now or sacrifice for the long-term vision?
There is no guarantee that the sacrifices G League players make will result in them playing in the NBA, but in Mark 10:29-30 (above), Jesus offers His followers guaranteed rewards in this life and the life to come when we make sacrifices for Him and for the Gospel.
What sacrifices are you making to follow Christ and to share the Gospel?
