Daily Devotional: Wednesday, August 27 – Take A Hit To Make A Play

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” — Romans 12:1

The average hit in the NHL generates thousands of pounds of force, which is equivalent to being in a car accident. Crazy to think anyone would willingly subject themselves to this, but hockey players do every time they touch the ice. Hockey legend Mario Lemieux once said, “Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be.” That’s right, “it always should be.” What a statement from one of the game’s legends.

One thing Mario and all serious hockey players understand is this: Sometimes you have to take a hit to make a play. Sacrificing your own body for the opportunity to move the puck in the right direction for your team is the culture built into the game of hockey.

In a lot of ways, that’s exactly what the life of a follower of Jesus should look like as well. Living out your faith unapologetically means sacrificing your own comfort for the advancement of the Gospel. And you can expect some hits to come your way as a byproduct.

Jesus exemplified what it looks like to take a hit to make a play by putting His life on the line for ours. As His followers we should be willing to do the same. In order to live the impactful lives God created us to have, sometimes we have to take a hit to make a play.

Choose to live a fearless and uncomfortable life for Jesus and you’ll put points on the board for the Kingdom!
