Daily Devotional: Tuesday, September 30 – Invite A Friend

“Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ ‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked. ‘Come and see,’ said Philip.” — John 1:45-46

I take a nap nearly every Sunday afternoon. A few years back, I took my customary nap and when I woke up, there was all kinds of chatter on social media about our church’s worship services that day.

There were posts like, “Did you see the Houston Texans players at church this morning? What were the Texans rookies doing at church?” Then I remembered seeing a half-dozen athletic-looking young men sitting together during our second service. It turns out they were some of the Houston Texans rookies.

The starting safety for the Texans at the time was a part of our church, so I assumed he invited them. He hadn’t. So I asked some of our leaders if they knew how the Texans rookies got to our church. One of our leaders told me that a member of our church was the starting quarterback at a university in Alabama. When he was a senior, he befriended a freshman wide receiver on the team. That freshman wide receiver later became one of the Houston Texans rookies.

So this member invited his former college teammate to visit our church. And this rookie invited his teammates. After that Sunday, that player and another one of the rookies began attending our church regularly.

In John 1:41-42, Andrew invites his brother, Simon Peter, to meet Jesus. In John 1:43-47, Philip invites Nathaniel to meet Jesus. And their lives were never the same.

There is power in invitation. Is there someone you can invite to church this weekend? Pray for that person right now.
