“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” — Proverbs 4:25

In the lead-up to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, the United States’ figure skating hopes rested squarely on the shoulders of Ilia Malinin. The 21-year-old had already enjoyed tremendous international success, and anticipation built as fans wondered what new elements the skating sensation would unveil to capture Olympic gold.

Then, Malinin started his individual free-skate routine. Shaky. One fall became two, and by the end, a tearful Malinin finished in eighth. Days later, he reflected in an Instagram post about what led to his struggles.

“Even your happiest memories can end up tainted by the noise,” his caption read in part. “Vile online hatred attacks the mind and fear lures it into the darkness, no matter how hard you try to stay sane through the endless insurmountable pressure. It all builds up as these moments flash before your eyes, resulting in an inevitable crash.”

Malinin is still one the premier figure skaters in the world with years left in his prime. He will be back. But Malinin’s story is an unfortunate example of what God sought to help His people avoid. He did so with His words in a Bible book filled with wisdom, known as the Book of Proverbs.

“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” — Proverbs 4:25

In Proverbs 4, an older man is giving younger men lessons he’s learned in life. He too was young once, distracted by the praise and burdened by the pressure. God had called him to a specific task, but as he moved his gaze off of God, to the right and to the left — to the opinions and expectations of others — his task became impossible.

You have also been given a calling by God, no matter where you are, no matter how young or old. He will equip you to fulfill that God-given calling, but when you take your eyes off of Him, you begin to rely on your own strength, and the “inevitable crash” comes.

The world is a noisy place, but just because it’s loud doesn’t mean you have to listen to it. Instagram will tell you how you should dress, movies will tell you what you should value, and peers will tell you what you’re worth. It’s nothing but noise.

I’m not saying you should cut yourself off entirely from the outside world; that wouldn’t be wise, either. But recognize the opinions of the world for what they are: background noise to avoid as you focus on God’s voice — the voice of truth, the voice of love, the only voice that matters for eternity.
