“The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” — Job 1:21b

Vince Dooley was a very successful college football coach. In 25 years of leading the Georgia Bulldogs, he had one losing season and a few mediocre years, but competed in 20 bowl games during his tenure. One of those down years was 1979, when his team finished with only six wins in 11 games. After this disappointing season, many players and fans were downhearted.
However, 1980 was a breakthrough season, in part due to an outstanding defense and also because of a phenomenal freshman running back, Herschel Walker. Georgia went undefeated in 1980 — including the New Year’s Day Sugar Bowl in 1981 — and had a great run of wins from 1980-1983. Players and fans went from feeling discouraged without much hope for what was next, to walking on cloud nine.
In the midst of our tough experiences, we often don’t know how or if things will get better. We need patience, endurance and a deep trust in God’s sovereignty.
When the ancient man Job lost all of his wealth and every one of his children in one day, and then lost his health soon afterward, the pain and heartache brought him to a low place. He moved toward despair but he didn’t lose heart. His wife turned negative and wanted him to forget God and give in to his worst instincts, but Job knew about God’s promises and he clung to God’s Word like a man hanging on to a little twig on the side of a cliff (Job 19:25-26).
The pain and suffering continued for an extended period and Job didn’t know if he’d ever be delivered from poverty or be restored to good health. His once full home was now quiet and empty. The pain was unbearable. He also endured insults from his friends who imagined some serious sin caused his suffering. Of course, he wasn’t perfect, but Job didn’t do anything scandalous to cause his sudden losses. The Lord allowed these heartbreaking misfortunes to test Job and show his faith was real and lasting.
Eventually, the self-appointed experts were proven wrong. Even though Job knew his friends’ harsh criticism was misguided, he prayed for their souls. As God showed them the genuineness of Job’s Godliness, he cleansed them of their false judgments of Job. Then God gave Job a double portion of the lost possessions and also filled his home with 10 more children (Job 42:10-13).
For a believer, we know with certainty that life will be better after this earthly life of trouble and sorrow, but sometimes God allows us to go through severe pain to remove impurities, much like metal in a furnace. We can better appreciate the good times when we are delivered from the pits of hardship.
God recorded the experiences of Job, as well as the prophets and apostles, to remind us that God preserves us and helps us make it through everything, even when things don’t look like we’d hope. So have faith in the Lord — with Him we will overcome in God’s time and way.
