NEW PODCAST: Danny Kanell - Sports Commentator, Former NFL QB

THIS IS EPISODE 245 OF THE SPORTS SPECTRUM PODCAST

Danny Kanell is a sports commentator for Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio and CBS Sports. He played his college football as a quarterback at Florida State under Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden, and later was inducted into the Florida State Athletic Hall of Fame. Kanell also played baseball with the Seminoles and was drafted in the 25th round of the 1993 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees after his junior year.

He stuck with football, though, and was selected in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He played nine seasons with the Giants, Falcons and Broncos.

After being cut by the Falcons in 2000, Kanell ventured into minor league baseball. But he made only 79 plate appearances for the Atlantic League’s Newark Bears before going back to football. He played with the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League in 2002, and returned to the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2003.

Kanell went into broadcasting after football ended for good, where he worked with ESPN as an analyst and radio host for more than a decade before being laid off in April 2017.

On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Kanell about the impact Coach Bowden had on his life, where his faith journey took shape, being let go by ESPN, the regret he has for not sharing his faith with others, and why Romans 8:28 has been a verse he’s clung to.
