Marcellus Casey is the team chaplain of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was raised in Chicago and Kansas City and both of his parents played a big role in helping him fall in love with God and people. Growing up with a father who worked for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes gave Marcellus an inside look at sports ministry, and in both high school and college, he was elected by his peers to lead the FCA Campus Huddle.
Marcellus played football for the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats under Coach Mel Tjeerdsma. It was there that he led Bible study for the team his freshman and sophomore years, before taking on the full-time role of team chaplain as a junior and senior.
After graduating in 2005, Casey was hired to be the full-time FCA campus representative at the University of Illinois. As a chaplain, he directly ministered to the wrestling, baseball, basketball and football teams. His ministry to coaches and athletes at U of I was closely connected to the leadership of Illinois head football coach Ron Zook (2005-2012), and head men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber (2004-2012; he’s currently with Kansas State).
Casey is married to his high school sweetheart, Stephanie, and they have three daughters (Salem, Cora, Vivienne) and one son (Ralphie). They live in Kansas City, Mo., and Marcellus is the COO at the Hope Center, a ministry focused on developing healthy communities where the vulnerable can flourish and have hope.
On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Casey about the chapel service lessons he’s taught to members of the Chiefs during the 2020 season, and why prayer has become a vital part of the team chapel gatherings once again during the 2020 playoff run to the Super Bowl.
