With 2024 coming to a close, Sports Spectrum is highlighting our most-viewed stories of the year.
Major League Baseball teams lead the way when it comes to pro sports franchises giving their players a platform from which they can share about their faith. Even if only for a night, numerous MLB teams around the country host a “Faith Night” of some sort and have done so for years.
The events are typically held before or after a game, with fans arriving early or staying after to hear players share their testimonies of faith in Jesus Christ. Worship music is often included in the event as well, whether from a well-known Christian band or a worship team from a nearby church. It all makes for a powerful spectacle where God is praised in a stadium where athletes are typically cheered.
The Baltimore Orioles hosted their first such event in August. Six Orioles players — Trevor Rogers, Jordan Westburg, Ryan O’Hearn, Gunnar Henderson, Danny Coulombe and James McCann — boldly shared their testimonies of faith in Jesus Christ while thousands of fans crowded into the lower sections between first and third bases. And the worship band from Reach Church in Newark, Delaware, led those assembled in a time of worshiping God.
Coulombe, a 10-year MLB veteran, shared, “This is the most faithful team I’ve ever been around.” Westburg agreed, saying he’s “never been in a clubhouse with so many players who love Jesus Christ and follow Him every single day.”
The Sports Spectrum audience enjoyed reading about numerous players on one of the best teams in baseball proclaiming the name of Jesus, as our story picked up a load of traffic the following weekend. It ends the year ranked No. 3 among our most-viewed stories in 2024:
