Star center Raegan Beers leads Oklahoma to Sweet 16, knows she’s ‘living an answered prayer’

Oklahoma is one of 16 teams left standing after a busy first weekend in the women’s NCAA Tournament, as the No. 4-seeded Sooners advanced past Idaho, 89-59, and Michigan State, 77-71, to earn a date with No. 1 seed South Carolina in the Sweet 16 on Saturday. Back in January, Oklahoma handed South Carolina one of its three losses on the season.

In order to take down the powerhouse Gamecocks again, Oklahoma will need another stellar performance from star center Raegan Beers. The 6-foot-4 senior from Littleton, Colorado, has registered double-doubles in both NCAA Tournament games so far while shooting 65% (13 for 20).

Beers had a team-leading 18 points and 10 rebounds against the Vandals on Friday, and against the Spartans on Sunday she poured in another 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds (a team high) to help OU overcome a five-point halftime deficit and win. Beers also had four steals and two blocks.

In the postgame press conference, Beers was asked why she was emotional at the end of the game.

“Gratitude,” she said as she got teary-eyed, reflecting on her final game at OU’s Lloyd Noble Center. “I love this place. I love these people. … This is a really cool team — a coaching staff that has poured a lot into me for two years that I’m so, so grateful for, and a team that has just loved on me since the minute I came last year and this year. They continue to develop you as people and not just as basketball players, which I really appreciate.”

Beers transferred to Oklahoma ahead of the 2024-25 season after two with Oregon State, and her arrival in Norman has lifted the Sooners on the court; they’ve now advanced to the Sweet 16 in back-to-back years, their first two appearances in the tournament’s second weekend since 2013.

But perhaps even more impactful to the Sooners than Beers’ post presence has been her locker-room presence. Sitting next to Beers in Sunday’s press conference was her teammate, Payton Verhulst, who took time in her comments to compliment her friend.

“Raegan’s just a really special teammate and person,” Verhulst said. “Like not even speaking of basketball, [journalists] get to write and see everything she does on the basketball court, but she’s such a great person, and I genuinely mean that. Like, she’s one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met and ever played with.”

After Oklahoma’s tough loss in the Sweet 16 last season, Beers made sure to express her gratitude to people around her, and to God for making it all possible.

“It’s so cool to have that (support), because it just solidifies where you are and the program I chose,” she said. “… The core of my family was like, ‘Oh yeah, you’re gonna love it there, and I know you’re gonna love it there.’ My high school coach has poured into me all year, texting me every single day I think for the past two weeks. To have that is such a blessing.

“The Lord has truly given me a gift to play basketball with people that I love, surrounded by so many people that I love, and I cannot be more thankful for them.”

She includes a banner photo with the words “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” on her X account, echoing the Bible verse Psalm 139:14. She also declares that “I am His” and lists the Bible verse Isaiah 43:1 in her Instagram bio.

Beers, who is very involved with OU’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter, was a guest on an episode of Sports Spectrum’s “What’s Up” podcast in February 2025. She talked on the podcast about the importance of prayer in her decision to transfer.

“I trusted that the Lord was going to get me through it,” she said, “and He did because He does every time. He’s gotten me this far through a bunch of different things, so it was my job to put it on Him and say, ‘All right, this is Yours. This is Your burden.’ … It was really a moment of just trusting the Lord and being like, ‘I know you’re going to be before me and behind me and with me all the time’ (Deuteronomy 31:8).”

As she reflected on that time of uncertainty and transition, Beers said God answered her prayers very clearly.

“It was a moment after a game — I don’t remember which game — but it was a moment where I was just like, ‘Wow, I prayed for this a couple months ago. I was praying for this and I’m living it now,'” she said. “‘Take a second. You are living an answered prayer.'”

As she lives in thankful recognition of God’s incredible work in her life, Beers and her Oklahoma teammates now head to Sacramento, California, the site of their showdown with South Carolina. Tipoff between the Sooners and Gamecocks is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET Saturday.
