Buccaneers rookie WR Emeka Egbuka gives ‘all glory to God’ after 2-TD debut

New football season, same Emeka Egbuka.

After catching 81 passes for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns at Ohio State a year ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver led his new team in receiving yards (67) and found the end zone twice Sunday in his first NFL game, a 23-20 road victory against the division-rival Atlanta Falcons.

Egbuka’s first touchdown came on a 30-yard reception in the second quarter to give his team the lead.

His second came with less than a minute remaining and the Bucs trailing by three. The 25-yard reception proved to be the game-winning score.

“When it comes to Sundays, [quarterback Baker Mayfield and I] just let it rip — everything that we’ve been training for,” Egbuka said in the locker room after the game. “It’s nothing we haven’t done before in practice. It’s the first time the world’s seen it.”

Mayfield sees something special in his new 22-year-old target on the outside.

“He doesn’t play like a rookie,” Mayfield said of Egbuka after the game, via the Tampa Bay Times. “He doesn’t act like a rookie.”

Egbuka is bringing quite the pedigree with him to the NFL. The 19th overall selection in April’s NFL Draft, Egbuka is the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in career receptions (205) and receiving yards (2,868). He also helped the storied program win its ninth national championship last season, in a game that was played in the same stadium as his NFL regular-season debut.

Yet even with his already-lengthy list of football accomplishments, Egbuka finds his true purpose in being a child of God.

“At the end of the day, my value, I don’t place it in sports at all,” Egbuka said Sunday in the locker room after his two-touchdown performance. “Whether I had two touchdowns or I’ve never scored in the NFL before, that’s not really what I hang my hat on at the end of the day. … All glory to God.”

Egbuka is not one to shy away from talking about his faith in Christ. He writes, “Jesus is King and Lord of my life” and cites the Bible verse Matthew 11:28-30 on his Instagram bio, and he posts often about his faith. He even arrived for his first NFL preseason game with a shirt depicting Jesus wearing a crown of thorns on the front and the words “Ask me about Jesus” on the back.

In August 2024, Egbuka was one of a handful of Ohio State football players who organized and spoke at a massive on-campus faith event, which reportedly had more than 2,000 people in attendance. The success of last year’s event has led to the organization of a similar event in Columbus this season.

Last November, Egbuka appeared on the Sports Spectrum Podcast to discuss his football career and the boldness he displays in living out his faith in Jesus.

“The person who I am and how I got to the places I got is not by mere human effort. It’s nothing I can do,” Egbuka said on the podcast. “It’s all about the blood of the Lamb — Jesus Christ. He really came in and saved my life.”

Egbuka will strive to continue to excel on the field and help Tampa Bay reach the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year, even as he rests in the truth that Jesus accomplished everything for his salvation.

The Bucs take their 1-0 record on the road in a Week 2 “Monday Night Football” matchup against the Houston Texans (0-1). Kickoff is set for Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. ET.
