Q&A with pro golfer Kevin Streelman: 'Jesus means everything to me'

Kevin Streelman is a talented professional golfer with an impressive PGA Tour record and reputation as one of professional golf’s most consistent players. Since first appearing on golf’s main stage in 2003, Streelman has won twice and made more than 300 starts on the PGA Tour.

But there is more to Kevin Streelman than his golfing ability. Beyond his obvious talent, Streelman possesses a strong and inspiring Christian faith, and that is what drives him to be the best he can be both on and off the course. We sat down with him to learn more about his faith and golfing career.

What are your favorite things about the game of golf and being a professional golfer?
I love how golf is a small representation of the real world. You learn about honesty, integrity, winning and losing, and how to call a penalty on yourself. This all happens while learning the greatest game in the world, outdoors with your friends and family.

Can you describe what Jesus means to you and how He has impacted your life and career?
Jesus means everything to me. What He did on the cross bridges the gap between us and God, and eternal life. His teachings are the foundation of me and my family’s life. It is my prayer everyday to represent Him both on and off the golf course.

If you were given the chance, what advice would you give your younger self about faith, golf and life in general?
I wish I would have understood what a relationship with Jesus was while I was still in school. While I went to church and accepted Christ into my life, it wasn’t until my mid-20s that I truly understood what an intentional relationship with Jesus looked like.

Who is your Biblical hero?
Paul. The fact that God used someone who had actually persecuted Christians and eventually wrote half of the New Testament, it’s a representation of who He can use as broken sinners to do His eternal work.

What one phrase do you live by?
I love 1 Thessalonians. It says, “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks regardless of your circumstances. This is God’s will for you through Jesus Christ our Lord.” To me, this gives us a concise, beautiful way to live life. Rejoice in God’s love. Pray and talk with God constantly. Give thanks regardless of our circumstances. It’s easy to be thankful when things are going well, but truly spiritually-mature Christians can be thankful when things are getting tough. This is God’s secret to living a fruitful, joyous, thankful life. Rejoice, pray, be thankful!

As Kevin Streelman shifts his focus to the new PGA Tour season, his talent, faith and character continue to shine on and off the course.
