Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story burst onto the scene in 2016 with the most breathtaking MLB debut in history. He crushed seven home runs in his first week as a big leaguer, setting an MLB record for the most homers through a player’s first six games in the majors.
Of course, that pace wasn’t sustainable, but he did continue on for a fine rookie season: 27 HRs, 72 RBIs, .272 average in 97 games before a thumb injury ended his campaign early.
Story’s sophomore season was more of a struggle. In 145 games, he totaled just 24 home runs, 82 RBIs, a .239 average and 191 strikeouts (fifth most in the majors).
But the 25-year-old looks to have found his groove again this season — especially this month. Through 20 games in June, he’s hitting .329 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. On the season he’s hitting .265 with 16 HRs (third in NL) and 56 RBIs (second in NL). He’s starting to garner All-Star attention.
And Story does all this while living for Christ.
“We’re here playing baseball, but we’re called to do something greater, I believe,” Story told Sports Spectrum. “That’s to further God’s kingdom, to help others and try to be like Jesus as close as we can.”
Story grew up in Irving, Texas, and attended Oak View Baptist Church every Sunday with his family. And he was taught to serve others by his parents — his father, Kenny, has been with the Irving Fire Department for more than 30 years, and his mother, Teddie, is the CEO of Irving Cares, a non-profit committed to providing essential services to Irving residents in need.
As for the Rockies, they have needed Story’s bat to stay in contention. They’re 8-12 in the month of June, which dropped them below .500 before a win Friday night pulled them back even (38-38). Colorado is trending in the right direction, aided by Story, as it has won four in a row and hosts Miami (29-47) this weekend.
